Kate Middleton Baby Names: What's the Favorite, According to Oddsmakers?

Betting on Kate Middleton baby names has become a British craze this spring, which is pretty hilarious, but also not entirely surprising.

People will bet on anything, after all, and this is a particularly fun topic to speculate about. So which name is currently most popular among bettors?

Based on the number of bets placed, Britain's bookmakers say Alexandra is the clear favorite, with the odds already down to a surprising 2-1 as of Thursday.

Elizabeth, Diana and Victoria are close behind, following widespread speculation that the royal couple is expecting a girl - which is not even confirmed.

All things considered, and assuming Kate Middleton is pregnant with the royal heiress, the bookies - and the gamblers - are likely on the right track.

"Royal names tend to be based on previous monarchs, relatives and godparents to ensure continuity," said historian Carolyn Harris of the University of Toronto.

"(The names) are not generally something out of the blue. It will be something that fits into the royal lineage, names used by previous kings and queens."

Alexandra is a favorite because it's the name of Queen Elizabeth II's great-grandmother, and the full name of Elizabeth herself also includes Alexandra.

It's still not clear why people suddenly became SO enthusiastic about that name, however many wager appear to be coming in from Berkshire, England.

In that county lies her majesty's residence, Windsor Castle. Homer bets ...

Also, according to the Daily Mail (UK), "someone at the local pub said Kate quite liked the idea of that name" during one of her recent goodwill tours.

Well if the bloke at the local pub said it, where do we place our bet?!
